AgriCapital Managing Director, Doug Sterkel, participated in a panel discussion at the BIO 2012 conference. The panel discussion was entitled Investing in Private Companies to Bring New Technologies to Market. Here are some of his opening remarks:
“As all of us in this room know, there are a number of macro trends that are affecting agriculture which will drive the need for new innovation and efficiency. Four major trends include 1) a growing world population, 2) the continued competition for resources and commodities, 3) increased world-wide wealth, especially in India and China and 4) social issues, including environmental factors and evolving consumer preference.
Three of these four trends focus our attention directly on the fact that there will be a need for us to produce more food and to produce it more efficiently. In fact, according to the American Feed Industry Association by 2050 the world population will require 100% more food. Of this increase, 70% will need to be generated from efficiency–improved technology. Social issues will likely cause us to produce food in new ways that may be challenging to agriculture. “
